How Faith Communities Talk About Abstinence and Virginity Impacts Teens

 

The issues of abstinence and virginity are central to many faith communities' expectations of teens. For victims/survivors of sexual abuse and violence, the ways these issues are defined and discussed can be painful and traumatizing, and LGBTQ teens may feel invisible or alienated by the conversation. Rev. Lydia Mulkey has worked in youth ministry for years, and brings important insights into the conversations with teens about sexuality within their faith and religious traditions.
